As a STEM Navigator, you would be working with members of the HSI STEM Student Success Team, including Daniel Gonzalez-Albor, STEM Counselor and Paulina Salazar Perez, Student Success and Support Specialist. In collaboration with the STEM Student Success Team, your leadership would ensure your STEM peers succeed in all the ways you have. 

STEM Navigators are peer mentors that holistically support STEM students through timely referrals to campus and community-based programs, services, activities, and engage them in various STEM related academic and career events. STEM Navigators engage their peers through an integrated approach to co-curricular development, promoting educational and career pathways in STEM, peer advising students of academic and social support services, and connecting students to deeper exploration of STEM majors, internship and research activities. STEM Navigators can be found at the STEM Harbor, located in SCI 223. 

STEM Navigators: 

  • Have completed at least one full semester at Ventura College. 
  • Have completed one STEM course. 
  • Are currently enrolled in a minimum of twelve (12) units (full time) each semester at Ventura College. 
  • Are in good academic standing with the highest GPA they are capable of achieving. 
  • Have experience with, or come from, Latine/a/o, African American/Black, Indigenous, Asian Pacific Islander, limited resources, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ+, and/or additional historically excluded communities, particularly in STEM. 
  • Are collaborators that hold encouraging beliefs in the ability of historically marginalized students to achieve college success. 
  • Are enthusiastic, responsible, and demonstrate leadership and teamwork. 

STEM Navigator Responsibilities: 

  • Advance the goals of Project S:AIL in STEM and the STEM Harbor. 
  • Encourage, engage, advise, and collaborate with STEM students from historically marginalized backgrounds 1-1 and in small groups. 
  • Facilitate 1-1 and small group discussions or study sessions with STEM students on a scheduled or drop-in basis. 
  • Support STEM students with setting academic, personal, and professional goals. 
  • Encourage STEM students to foster their existing cultural assets, intrinsic motivation, resilience, and leadership abilities. 
  • Inform and suggest additional academic, social, and emotional support resources for STEM students as needed. 
  • Provide student progress reports to the STEM Success Team as requested. 
  • Assist with the planning and execution of Project S:AIL/STEM Harbor events throughout the academic year.
